The Nordic nRF7002 EBII is an expansion board used to include the efficient WiFi 6 connection in the nRF54 Series Development Kits. Based on the nRF7002 WiFi Companion IC, it enables developers to design and test next-generation IoT products based on the need to support reliable wireless functionality that still needs to run on low power.

In the most basic meaning, the nRF7002 IC has the ability to support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi bands and is also entirely compatible with 802.11ax, yet it is also compatible with previous WiFi standards. It is a Station (STA) or SoftAP that has a bandwidth of 20MHz, a single spatial stream, and a maximum PHY throughput of 86Mbps. Its use of features such as Target Wake Time (TWT), BSS Colouring and OFDMA makes it particularly efficient in battery-powered equipment where efficiency is important.

Previously, we have covered some products that contain Nordic’s module, including the Lilygo T-Echo Plus, the MakerDiary development board, the Seeed Studio XIAO nRF54L15, and many more. Feel free to check those out for your references.

nRF54L15 Development Kit

The EBII board connects directly to nRF54L Development Kits using the dedicated expansion header, relying on the DK’s multiprotocol nRF54L SoC as the host processor. It includes an onboard dual-band antenna, along with headers for current measurement and power profiling, useful for developers optimising energy usage. By default, the board communicates through SPI; however, for purposes needing greater performance, it may be set to QSPI.

Through comprehensive support in the nRF Connect SDK, Nordic guarantees close interaction with its environment by providing example code and board definitions that enable developers to start fast. This makes the EBII a practical tool for designing WiFi products within ecosystems like Matter, where devices rely on multiple wireless technologies, Bluetooth LE for pairing, Thread for mesh networking, and WiFi for higher data throughput.

WiFi 6 expansion board

Thanks to its blend of low-power design, feature-rich WiFi 6 capabilities, and Nordic’s multiprotocol expertise, the nRF7002 EBII fits a wide range of applications. These include smart home devices, asset tracking, industrial sensors, wearables, smart agriculture, and edge AI solutions. For anyone working with the nRF54 Series, this expansion board serves as a powerful and streamlined way to explore secure, scalable, and energy-efficient WiFi applications. You can find more information on the official product page and press release.

The nRF7002 EBII WiFi 6 expansion board is expected to become widely available through major distributors starting Q1 2026, as it is a newly released expansion board. Current public listings mainly show pricing for the earlier EB version, which sells for around ₹870–₹900 per unit, but the EBII’s final price may differ once distributors begin stocking it. For now, limited early samples are circulating, and official availability will roll out gradually through partners like Mouser and Digi-Key once production ramps up.
