Olimex has also announced pre-orders of a new ESP32-C5-EVB, an open-hardware development board based on the ESP32-C5-WROOM-N8R4 SOC and powered by Espressif. The board focuses on Internet of Things (IoT), automation, and wireless connection uses that work with dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5 Low Energy, Zigbee, Thread, and Matter protocols. Its combination of wireless technologies, strong industrial inputs and outputs, and backup power options makes the ESP32-C5-EVB a great choice for creators developing IoT gateways, automation tools, and devices that support Matter.

Hardware Overview:

The ESP32-C5 itself is Espressif’s first RISC-V microcontroller that marries connectivity with useful control and power management capabilities. It combines two relays (250V/10A) and two opto-isolated input devices that allow it to safely switch and monitor external devices. A UEXT connector and an extension connector allow hardware expansion, while the inclusion of USB-C (power, debug, and JTAG) simplifies development and programming. Olimex also added Boot and Reset buttons for convenience during prototyping.

The board has 8 MB of Flash and 4 MB of RAM, which is sufficient for more complicated applications. Another feature is the integrated LiPo UPS charger with step-up converter, so that the board can be kept running during power failures, which is a really useful feature for always-on IoT applications. The PCB measures 80 x 70mm and includes three mounting holes for easy integration into enclosures.

ESP32-C5-EVB Front

The ESP32-C5-EVB depends on the usual software tools provided by Espressif. Builders can use the ESP-IDF, which stands for Espressif IoT Development Framework. This framework includes USB-C JTAG for fixing issues, and the board is compatible with well-known platforms like Arduino and PlatformIO. This makes it easy for both amateurs and skilled developers to work with.

Previously, we have covered some ESP32-based products, including the XIAO 7.5-inch ePaper Panel, the Guiton display dev board, and the ESP32-P4 Wi-Fi 6 Development Board. You can check these out for your future reference.

Pricing and availability

As of now, the ESP32-C5-EVB is available for 16.95 EUR for single units, with discounts for volume orders (16.10 EUR for 10–49 pcs, 15.26 EUR for 50–10,000 pcs). The board is currently up for pre-order on Olimex’s official store, with an expected availability date of September 12, 2025. They expect it to be available soon in the AliExpress store. Olimex provides hardware design resources such as the schematic (PDF) and KiCad source files, along with demo software for quick evaluation, on its official website.
