Waveshare 2-Ch GMSL camera adapter board

Waveshare has recently released the MAX9296-GMSL-DESER-MODULE, a GMSL camera adapter that allows up to two GMSL cameras to be connected to host boards such as Raspberry Pi 5, Jetson Orin Nano, and Jetson Orin NX. It is built around the MAX9296A deserializer chip and supports both GMSL1 and GMSL2 through software configuration. The module enables high-bandwidth and low-latency video transmission over a single coaxial or twisted-pair cable, while offering good noise immunity and long transmission distance. It is suitable for applications such as autonomous driving, machine vision, intelligent security, and other industrial and automotive vision systems.

Waveshare MAX9296-GMSL-DESER-MODULE Specifications:

The board is a dual-channel GMSL camera adapter based on the MAXIM (ADI) MAX9296A deserializer, supporting the connection of up to two GMSL cameras. It is compatible with both GMSL2 and GMSL1 cameras through software configuration and works with Raspberry Pi 5 as well as NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano and Orin NX developer kits. The adapter supports common GMSL serializers such as MAX9295, MAX96717, and MAX96705, and provides two MATE-AX FAKRA Z connectors for camera input along with two 22-pin CSI connectors for host board interfacing.

Designed for high-bandwidth, low-latency video transmission, the module supports long-distance and noise-resistant data transfer over coaxial or twisted-pair cables. It supports ISX031 GMSL cameras, operates from a 5V power input, and is suitable for applications including autonomous driving, machine vision, and intelligent security systems.

GMSL enables video, audio, and control data to be transmitted over a single coaxial or twisted-pair cable, typically up to 15 meters, with very low latency. Compared to standard MIPI CSI-2 ribbon cables, which are usually limited to around 30 cm and are more susceptible to noise, GMSL offers a more reliable solution for long-distance and electrically noisy industrial environments.

The company states that the board uses the MAX9296A deserializer chip to connect up to two GMSL cameras simultaneously to Jetson Orin platforms. This makes it suitable for applications such as robotic autonomous driving, car surround-view systems, driver assistance and vision fusion, electronic rear-view mirrors, unmanned smart factory production, and other vision-based industrial applications. More details about the hardware, specification diagrams, and hardware connections will be available on the product’s wiki page, but at the time of writing, these wiki resources are still under active development.

The MAX9296-GMSL-DESER-MODULE is available on AliExpress for $114.47 and on Amazon for $109.99. It can also be purchased directly from the Waveshare official store for $89.99, though this price does not include shipping.
